What Is Courier Insurance?

Courier insurance, van courier insurance, or courier fleet insurance as it’s also known, is a flexible policy that gives drivers the protection they need while making deliveries. At JMG we can tailor it to your needs so that it can cover everything from your van and goods in transit, to your courier public liability insurance and your employees if you have any.  Cover from JM Sandbach gives you financial protection from common risks such as:

  • Injury or property damage caused by your business to members of the public
  • Loss or damage to the goods you’re carrying – goods in transit
  • Sickness or injury to your employees that results from your business’s activities
  • Accidental damage, loss, or theft of your vehicles

Are there any policy options?

Yes, there are several, the most common ones being:

  • Public liability insurance for couriers – protects courier drivers and businesses against the cost of legal action should a member of the public sue you as they have been injured or their property damaged while you are working.  It can include cover for incidents such as someone having a wall damaged by one of your drivers while making a delivery, or a driver accidentally knocking a cyclist off their bike
  • Employers’ liability – if you have any employees, be they full-time, part-time, or contracted, then employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement.  It provides protection in the event of an employee injuring themselves or if their property is damaged while at work.  The law says that if you employ at least one person, you must have employers’ liability (sometimes called ‘E.L. insurance’) in place to protect your employees.  Your policy must:
    • Cover you for at least £5 million
    • Be with an authorised insurer
  • Goods in transit – this is a popular and important cover that insures the goods you are carrying from theft, loss, or accidental damage.  It can even cover goods while they are being held by you ahead of delivery.  Many customers now insist on courier firms having goods in transit in place
  • Fleet insurance – if you have three or more business vehicles, be they vans, cars, or motorbikes, you can save time and money by insuring them with courier fleet insurance, which can help you:
    • Save money – by insuring multiple vehicles on one policy, you can reduce your per-vehicle costs
    • Save time – having one policy to administer means you can save on admin time versus having to look after several single vehicle policies
    • Enjoy greater flexibility – you can add or remove vehicles and drivers as you need to, without the need to get a new quote and policy.  You can also insure your entire team to drive your vehicles with an any-driver policy
    • Get cover for complex driving risks – whether you need cover for young or newly qualified drivers or those with poor claims histories, an any-driver policy could enable you to cover the drivers you need more easily
  • Business interruption cover – if something catastrophic happened, such as a fire or a flood, and your business was forced to close for a while, could you cope?  With no money coming in and bills needing to be paid, would you be able to keep going?  Business interruption cover provides you with an income while your business is out of action
  • Personal accident protection – protects your organisation should someone be involved in an accident at work.  It can pay out in the event of death, bodily injury, or disablement.  The compensation provided can also pay for temporary staff or cover the overtime cost for other team members

What levels of cover are there?

Like most motor policies, delivery driver insurance comes with three levels of cover:

  • Third-party – the minimum legal requirement to drive your vehicle on the road.  This will ensure that you are covered should you damage someone else’s vehicle if the accident is your fault
  • Third-partyfire, and theft – this will ensure that you are covered should you damage someone else’s vehicle if the accident is your fault or if one or more of your vans is accidentally damaged by someone else, destroyed by fire or stolen
  • Fully comprehensive – provides the same cover as third-party, fire, and theft, but if an incident is your fault, then repairs to your van will also be covered

Who needs courier insurance?

It has been designed for any driver who makes deliveries for money on a ‘hire and reward’ basis.  Typical policyholders are couriers, delivery drivers, and other businesses that make multiple deliveries a day, so:

  • Delivery drivers
  • Delivery businesses that make multiple drops in a day
  • Part-time/lifestyle couriers – this includes people who use their own car to do deliveries

Courier insurance FAQ

This can be a complicated area of cover, and it’s important to get it right.  After all, your van isn’t just your method of transport; it’s your business.  To help you get the protection you need, here are our courier insurance frequently asked questions.  We hope they’ll be of use, but if you’d like some personalised, independent help, then please call us on 01782 308372 or contact us, and one of our specialists will be happy to help.

That will depend on several factors such as the driver’s age, your postcode/where you are working, the amount of mileage you are doing, and the type and value of the vehicle you are using.  For a personalised insurance quote, please call us on 01782 308372 or contact us today

Because it gives you ‘hire and reward’ cover, something that standard car or van insurance won’t give you.  If you do deliveries for money and you don’t have it in place, you can face a hefty fine of up to £1,000

Anyone who is doing deliveries for money.  Whether you’re using your car, a motorbike, or your van, you must have courier or van courier insurance in place

Yes, even if you only do a couple of deliveries a week or work as a ‘lifestyle courier’, you still need to have it in place

There are a few ways you can potentially cut the cost of your insurance, such as:

  • Use an independent broker that specialises in courier insurance such as JMG Sandbach
  • Increase your excess
  • Build up your no-claims bonus
  • Add extra security to your vehicle such as dashcams or a tracker
  • Pay annually
  • Get a named rather than any-driver policy
  • If you have two or more vehicles, consider getting courier fleet insurance
  • Reduce your mileage – longer runs are more risky

It doesn’t have to be.  If you use an independent insurance broker specialising in courier insurance such as JMG Sandbach, then it can be affordable.  For a personalised courier insurance quote, please call us on 0345 340 2111 or contact us today

It covers your vehicle and, depending on the level of cover you take out, it can pay for repairs to third-party vehicles, the goods you are carrying and injuries to the public/damage to their property through courier public liability insurance

If you use your van to deliver goods for money, even if it’s only occasionally or on a part-time basis, then you need courier van insurance

Unless you have goods in transit insurance in place, then the goods you’re carrying won’t be protected against loss, theft or damage

No, usually they will cover you, often as part of a courier fleet insurance policy.  If you are working as a self-employed driver for Evri, Amazon, DPD, etc., then you will need to provide your own courier insurance

Yes, as your car insurance won’t have a risk and reward element to it.  Doing deliveries on your standard car insurance can lead to a fine or the invalidation of your policy

Goods in transit insurance protects the packages you are carrying from loss, theft, or damage and it’s taken out by most couriers

Courier fleet insurance is a policy that allows vehicle owners to insure multiple vehicles and drivers on a single policy.  If you have two or more vehicles to cover, you can save time and money with a courier fleet insurance policy.  To find out more, please call us on 0345 340 2111 or contact us today

Leased vehicles are often used by couriers and insurers are fine with this, if a formal lease agreement is in place
